La scelta è veramente amletica: New York offre una tale varietà di musei da rendere difficile una lista di priorità.
Chi viene in questa città per la prima volta sceglierà, quasi certamente, di dedicare al Metropolitam Museum of Art gran parte della giornata. Pare sia la più ricca collezione d’arte del mondo occidentale e le ore trascorreranno
veloci tra capolavori di tutti i tempi. Dopo il restauro del 2007, sono particolarmente interessanti le gallerie di arte ellenistica, etrusca e romana.
Il giardino sovrastante l’ala moderna ospita ogni anno sculture diverse. Chi ama la pittura olandese e fiamminga troverà qui dipinti tra i più belli al mondo. Gli appassionati di storia naturale si perderanno nell’enorme complesso dell’
American Museum of Natural History tra dinosauri, meteoriti, vita degli oceani fino alla sala spaziale del Planetarium.
Noi decidiamo di tornare al MOMA perchè il settore dedicato al design è un continuo work-in-progress ed anche per rivedere la Notte Stellata di Van Gogh è capace di dare, ogni volta, un’emozione nuova e diversa.
L’ edificio del Guggenheim Museum è già, di per sé, una parte importante del Museo. Camminando lungo la rampa che ricorda una gigantesca conchiglia, si possono ammirare opere di artisti, dall’Ottocento ai nostri giorni. La terrazza
delle sculture, al quinto piano, offre un bellissimo affaccio sul Central Park. Uscendo dal Guggenheim è d’obbligo una visita a Strawberry Fields, un angolo del Central Park restaurato a forma di lacrima e voluto da Yoko Ono in
memoria di John Lennon. Una curiosità: il mosaico raffigurante la parola Imagine proviene da Napoli.
